Acknowledgments

This is an unusual website combining (i) algebra and trigonometry tutorials–which I created for Native American students in Oakland I tutor, and (ii) my own family’s history on my mother’s side, which comes from Florida, Alabama and Oklahoma.

The history portion of the website begins with my 4th great grandfather Chief Billy Bowlegs of the Seminoles who led his tribe from Florida to Oklahoma in the Trail of Tears. This portion of the website is multi-generational with contributions from me, my mother Leslie, my grandmother Lois Perry and my great grandmother Letha King, who died in 2013 at age 100. Some of these documents were copied from files in the National Archives the summer of 1994 by my mother, before I was born.

It is a family album but with historic significance, with many primary source documents.

It is my hope that this will become multi-dimensional as I add translations from Seminole to English, which the language specialist Melanie Frye of the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma is helping with, and audio recordings from my grandpa’s recorded oral histories of Letha years ago. This is a work in progress for my family, the students I have tutored who are from many other tribes, and others who may be interested.
